Google Assignment #4: Picasa

Ever since I was a child we have gone to Wildwood, New Jersey as a family vacation. And, when I say family, I do not mean just my mom, dad & brothers and sisters...I mean everyone...aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents...ALL OF US.

I know that Wildwood is not the most glamorous place on this earth, but it is to us. We love the beach, boardwalk, the Pancake house, mini-golf and the feeling that we get when we get through Philly and into Jersey! I can remember as a child smelling the ocean for the first time...it was salty and fishy!

Last summer, my husband and I met the family in Wildwood for a week's vacation. There were 32 of us, ranging from 18 months to 77 years old! It was such a blessing to be there with everyone. It is just not a real vacation (for me at least) unless we are in Jersey.

Google Assignment #3: YouTube Video

Title: Disney Copyright Law, A Fair(y) Use Tale

This is one of my all-time favorite copyright videos on YouTube. This video uses very short clips from Disney films to define and provide examples of copyright and Fair Use. (*I have to admit, I am very impressed by the effort put into making this film and am always entertained as well.)

This film can be hard to watch, especially toward the end, but the fact that the creator used Disney clips to illustrate how he was legally creating this short film is genius!

I use this video to introduce copyright in my class. I do not have pre-service teachers in my class, but I have many business students who have little to no knowledge about copyright. This video prelude helps them to understand what they can and cannot use legally when creating their final project (a non-linear PPT.) I admit, that it makes more sense to show this to pre- and in-service educators, but all students need to know that they are covered while they are in school, but once they graduate or are employed, they are no longer covered by Fair Use. I then lead the discussion about companies and how they protect their images, movies, trademarks, etc.

Google Assignment #2: Google Forms

I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! *jumping up & down*


I have never used Google Forms before and am so sorry that I was missing out!

The creation, formatting and management of a form is so easy and simple. Things I love:

1. drag-and-drop feature to re-arrange questions
2. ability to copy questions to save time when using the same answer options
3. the many themes (more options in Forms than in Presentation)
4. being able to collaboratively create a survey/form
5. the wonderfully, formatted spreadsheet that the data is fed into


I can honestly say that, so far, there is nothing that I found that is discouraging from using Google Forms. I would like to see how the form looks on a Blackberry of iPhone. Are folks able to complete the form using those devices?


There are so many options…

1. Workshop surveys
2. Collection of student contact information
3. Feedback from students/parents on a lesson
4. Field trip check list
5. Selection of dates and locations for a girls’ night out (or guys)

Google Assignment #1: Google Presentation

As I stated in a previous post, I am taking an online course about using Google in education. For one of our assignments, we have to add three posts to a blog. The first of the three entries is about Google Presentation. Below you will see my presentation as well as my thoughts about Google Presentation.



I know that I broke all of the PPT “rules” when I created my presentation on Google Docs, however, I am trying to work through some thoughts that are rolling around in my head and what a better place to do so.


I was happy with Google Docs Presentation, but found that I am much more a visual person when it comes to creating PPTs and that it is much easier in PPT to create a visual presentation. However, in the same breath, the Google Docs Presentation provides you with a decent array of tools to create a collaborative presentation that could be taken into PPT or Keynote (???) to develop further. And that it what it is all about, right?!?!

I did have one very minor issue – sometimes when I was trying to move text around, Google Docs would not let me drag-and-drop, and sometimes I lost my highlighted text. Again, very minor and easy to work around.

I like the idea of using Google Docs to introduce PPT to students. The fact the there are not as many bells & whistles can allow the student to focus on the content of the PPT and not the colors, animations, etc. This is something that I see students struggle with all of the time – they are so worried about what theme to use, that they forget about the content. Then, once they have their content drafted, you can easily download and “enhance” in PPT.

A Year has Past...

And I have thought about updating this blog, but, I hate to admit this, never made the time. Now, finally thanks to an online course that I am taking am able to draft a post. Thanks Robin!

What has happened in the past year...

• Josie is potty trained (at 27 months!!)
• Our basement has been finished
• I attended & presented at the ANGEL User Conference
  
• I turned 30 - OMG!!!
• We are certain that Jalen has the memory of an elephant
• My sister Jenna moved out...my sister Katie moved in
  
• I am the official "ANGEL Administrator"
• I have a growing interest in SMART technology & Google Apps
  
• We went to the beach and are *fingers crossed* planning a trip to Disney

And throughout all of this, the days and weeks seem to blur together, yet the highlights seem to stick-out somehow. Like, taking the girls to see Key West Express and planning the same outing for tomorrow evening (has it been a year already?!?!) And, what about the time that Josie ate Jalen's imaginary alligator, spit it out and Jalen put it on top of the playhouse so Josie could not eat it again. Try moderating that battle!!!

Oh, and night that Josie was able to understand that she needed to wear a diaper to bed..."Diaper on for now. When I wake up...take..it..off!" Although, that didn't last long. Luckily, she only wet the bed one time! WTG Josie!

I vividly recall opening the email that said that I was selected to present at the ANGEL User Conference in Chicago. My first presentation at a national conference and to my delight, my session was full of folks with great interest and questions for me. I left that conference with a re-newed self-image and confidence.

But, at the end of the day, if I told my girls and husband that I loved them, then the day was a success. If I can say that I helped one person at work, then the work day was a success. If I can look myself in the mirror...well then...I can sigh and fall asleep...until 2 a.m. when someone creeps into my side of the bed ;)
